The works of Susumu Matsushita seem to have a very comic or cartoon feel to them. Compared to other manga artists in Japan, Matsushita’s drawing of characters have an extremely American look to them. They do not look like any manga characters I have seen. That makes his work very unique.

I also find Matushita’s depiction of women to be extremely risque. The female figures are depicted with huge and significant bosoms and their bodies are mostly depicted in an hourglass shape. The depictions of men, on the other hand, seem to be less racy and are less subject to any alluring details. What is for sure similar to all the human characters is that they are depicted in a cartoon or caricature-like manner with obnoxiously large heads and are posed in body-breaking positions.

Matsushita is also known for creating animal characters. These are extremely prominent in his works. Most of his animal characters are depicted as funny animals, that is animals are standing on two legs and wearing clothes. These characters are usually depicted with large eyes, animated proportions, and abnormal features (birds with hands, etc.) Sometimes these characters wear pants and shoes and sometimes they do not. I think it depends on whatever the client asks if a character should have certain features or not. After all, they are cartoon characters.
